In House HVAC Technician - APS Unipod Stirling Center

APS Unipod Global is seeking a skilled and experienced HVAC Technician to join the Engineering & Maintenance Department at APS Unipod Stirling Center. The HVAC Technician will be responsible for the installation, inspection, servicing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of all heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and mechanical ventilation systems across the Centre. The successful candidate will ensure optimal indoor climate control, air quality, energy efficiency, and uninterrupted operation of HVAC systems in accordance with UK building regulations and industry best practices.

The role requires a proactive maintenance professional with excellent technical knowledge, strong diagnostic skills, and a commitment to providing a safe and comfortable living environment for students, employees, and visitors.

Heat Systems
  • Central heating systems.

  • Boilers (where within certification and competency; otherwise support certified engineers).

  • Radiators.

  • Heat pumps.

  • Hot water circulation systems.

  • Heating controls.

  • Thermostats.

  • Pipework associated with heating distribution.

  • Ensure comfortable indoor temperatures throughout the Centre during colder seasons.

Ventilation Systems
  • Mechanical ventilation systems.

  • Fresh air handling units.

  • Exhaust ventilation systems.

  • Kitchen extraction systems.

  • Bathroom extractor systems.

  • Air ducts and ventilation grilles.

  • Air balancing components.

  • Air filtration systems.

  • Ensure proper indoor air quality and adequate ventilation across all facilities.

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Systems
  • Refrigerant system inspections.

  • Compressor maintenance.

  • Condenser and evaporator servicing.

  • Leak detection.

  • Refrigerant charging and recovery (where appropriately certified).

  • Airflow testing.

  • Performance optimisation.

Key Responsibilities
HVAC Systems Maintenance
  • Perform routine inspection, servicing, maintenance, and repair of all HVAC systems throughout APS Unipod Stirling Center.

  • Ensure heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems operate efficiently and reliably.

  • Diagnose and rectify faults affecting HVAC performance.

  • Conduct preventive maintenance to minimise equipment failures and downtime.

  • Replace worn or defective components, including motors, belts, filters, thermostats, sensors, valves, and compressors.

  • Maintain accurate service records and maintenance logs.

Preventive Maintenance
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for all HVAC equipment.

  • Conduct seasonal inspections before summer and winter operational periods.

  • Replace filters according to maintenance schedules.

  • Lubricate mechanical components.

  • Clean coils, ducts, vents, and condensate drains.

  • Monitor system efficiency and recommend improvements.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
  • Monitor HVAC energy consumption.

  • Recommend energy-saving solutions and operational improvements.

  • Optimise system performance to reduce utility costs.

  • Support APS Unipod's sustainability initiatives.

  • Recommend equipment upgrades when necessary.

  • Assist management in achieving energy efficiency objectives.

Documentation and Reporting
  • Maintain detailed maintenance records.

  • Prepare service reports following inspections and repairs.

  • Record preventive maintenance activities.

  • Document equipment performance trends.

  • Report recurring faults and recommend corrective measures.

  • Assist in maintenance budgeting by identifying future replacement requirements.

Equipment Monitoring
  • Air Handling Units (AHUs)

  • Fan Coil Units (FCUs)

  • Ventilation fans

  • Exhaust systems

  • Air filters

  • Chillers (where applicable)

  • Heat pumps

  • Control panels

  • Building Management System (BMS) interfaces

  • Temperature monitoring devices

Emergency Maintenance
  • Respond promptly to HVAC breakdowns and urgent maintenance requests.

  • Restore climate control systems with minimal disruption.

  • Coordinate with the Maintenance Supervisor during emergencies.

  • Assist with contingency planning for equipment failures.

Health, Safety and Environmental Responsibilities
  • Ensure all HVAC work complies with UK Health & Safety legislation and industry regulations.

  • Follow safe isolation procedures before maintenance activities.

  • Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Ensure compliance with F-Gas Regulations when handling refrigerants.

  • Identify and rectify safety hazards promptly.

  • Participate in statutory inspections and regulatory audits.

  • Ensure proper disposal and recovery of refrigerants in accordance with environmental regulations.

Essential Qualifications
  • NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or an equivalent recognised qualification in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, or Refrigeration Engineering.

  • Valid F-Gas Certification for refrigerant handling.

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience maintaining commercial or institutional HVAC systems.

  • Strong knowledge of heating, cooling, refrigeration, and ventilation systems.

  • Ability to interpret HVAC drawings and technical specifications.

  • Excellent troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.

  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in hotels, universities, hospitals, student accommodation, or commercial facilities.

  • Knowledge of Building Management Systems (BMS).

  • Health & Safety qualification (IOSH or equivalent).

  • First Aid certification.

  • Basic electrical and plumbing knowledge.

  • Experience with energy-efficient HVAC technologies.
